PETITION FOR TRUSTWORTHY VOTING IN MISSOURI

Whereas numerous studies and computer security experts have found a variety of easily exploitable vulnerabilities in the electronic voting machines of all three major voting machine manufacturers, and

whereas these machines have a well documented history of malfunction, and

whereas these manufacturers have not been forthcoming in sharing information necessary to ensure reliable vote tallies with authorized election officials, or cooperative in analyzing or addressing the shortcomings of their machines, and

 

whereas these manufacturers, when challenged on these points, have engaged in a pattern of monopolistic and coercive business practices against state voting officials in Utah and Florida in an effort to avoid legitimate investigations and audits of their machines, and

 

whereas trustworthy voting mechanisms are essential to the functioning of democratic government,

 

therefore we call on all Missouri state representatives and legislators to ensure the adoption of the recommendations of the task force on voting system security at the Brennan Center for Justice as referenced in their press release at: http://www.brennancenter.org/presscenter/releases_2006/pressrelease_2006_0627.html
